TCEA workshop

Page history last edited by mary miner 12 years, 11 months ago

This is a page of interactive websites I want to be sure to include in a presentation.  I will add more.

http://www.hippocampus.org/  This is an INCREDIBLE site.  It will be very helpful. Check it out!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/index_flash.shtml  Excellent resource for interactive activities (mini labs) for students to do with the science journals on a wide variety of subjects.  All of the mini labs match to subjects we teach.  You might want to look under different age ranges as the age ranges mainly correspond to when these items are taught in the British system.  Some spiral around and teach at a later year at a bit deeper depth.

http://www.eduweb.com/portfolio/portfolio.php  A wide variety of explorations from science, social studies, history, and the arts.  Searchable by age and by subject.

http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/mesg/html/math6web/math6shell.html Okay, this will show up on another link here, but I had to give this one it's own space.  It says that it is 6th grade, but my 4th and 5th grade teachers have been looking at it and it has stuff for those grades as well.  PLEASE LOOK AT THIS SITE - WOOOHOOOO!  Kids will love it.  It is Mission Impossible - Spy Guys.  Very interactive math.  Look at the Perimeter and Area one in particular - awesome.

http://www.texaslre.org/branches_game/branches_game.html This game asks you to place statements about different branches of govt based on which branch it applies to.  It is set up as a tree with leaves.  Lots of fun and easy.  Good learning as leaves bounce back if placed incorrectly.

http://www.curiosikid.com/view/index.asp?pageMS=23040&ms=158 This is an INCREDIBLE spanish site for science.  Other things as well.  Take a look - it is AWESOME.  Elementary.

http://www.learner.org/interactives/story/  This is orally done.  It tells the story of Cinderella and then goes through all the different parts of a story, including conflict, resolution, setting, characters, etc.  It is great for 2 - 5th grade students.

http://www.eduweb.com/pintura/ This is a fun mystery adventure that teaches all different things about art and paintings, i.e. perspective, etc.  Use the information about art to solve the mystery.

http://forensics.rice.edu/ Three cases, featuring the characters from the TV show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, that teach forensic science.  These deal with DNA matching, fingerprints, and much much more.  The three cases range for easy to difficult in terms of effort to solve.  These are very inovative and fun.  Great way to learn about careers and the science is wonderfully embedded throughout.

http://n-squad.rice.edu/ An adventure game about alcohol and body systems. Funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

http://reconstructors.rice.edu/ Three independent adventure games that teach about the science behind drugs of abuse. Funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. This one was great.  I only have played part of the first level but the activities were lots of fun and what variety.  However, protazoa, fungi, bacteria, ameboic dysentry, and many others are locked in my brain, even if I can't spell them perfectly.

http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/category/new Here is a motherload science interactive teaching and learning applications.  Take a look.  They teach and some have games to apply the learning.

http://www.mesopotamia.co.uk/menu.html# When the website opens, put your cursor over Sumer.  You will see two sections open up - The Royal Tombs of Ur and Ziggurats.  Click on one or the other.  Each one has three parts, 1) story, 2) explore, and 3) challenge.  There are also sections about 1) Geography, 2) Gods, Goddesses, Demons, and Monsters, 3) Time, and 4) Writing.  Each one has the same three parts as stated above.  I challenge you to try some of the challenges.  They are not all that easy so be forewarned.
